Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Awards

The American Marketing Association (AMA) and the American Marketing Association Foundation (AMAF), along with presenting sponsor The Nonprofit Times, awarded the 2009 AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Award on July 16, 2009 at the AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference in Chicago, IL. In addition to designating the Nonprofit Marketer of the Year, two nonprofit marketers who perform extraordinary work for their organizations in the areas of 1) social media, or 2) special marketing initiatives were honored as part of the 2009 Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Awards ceremony. Eric Overman (photo, center), Operation Smile, received the Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Award, and Anne Bergquist (photo, left), YMCA of Metro Chicago, and David J. Neff (photo, right), American Cancer Society High Plains, received the Special Marketing Initiatives and Social Media subcategory awards, respectively. The AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Awards honor extraordinary leadership and achievement in the field of nonprofit marketing. The 2010 AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Awards call for nominations will be announced in the winter of 2010. The 2009 call for nominations is listed below to serve as a general guideline for the upcoming year.


2009 Eligibility
Nominees must be currently employed at a nonprofit organization with an active 501(c) category tax status and their current responsibilities must focus on the branding, marketing, and communications aspects of a nonprofit organization. All nominees will be considered regardless of organization size and budget, as some of the best nonprofit marketing is exhibited by those with the fewest resources. The recipient of the 2009 AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Award must be available to receive the award in person on July 16 at the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference (held July 15 -17, 2009) at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, IL.

2009 Application Process
A national “Call for Nominations” will be widely circulated in February, 2009. All nominees will receive notification of their nomination and will be required to complete and submit a candidate profile form for further consideration that provides additional information on the candidate’s experience in the following categories:

Vision and leadership, such as:

  • How the candidate’s work has helped advance or transform the field of nonprofit marketing,
  • How the candidate’s work has helped transform their organization,
  • Thought leadership in the form of speaking and writing on nonprofit marketing,
  • Recognition by others in the field.

Strategy, such as:

  • Breakthroughs and advances in organizing and planning in the context of nonprofit organizations,
  • Development of unique methodologies,
  • Effective collaboration inside the organization, and with outside partners,
  • Creative approaches to marketing problem solving and communications.

Results, such as:

  • Employment of effective methods of measurement,
  • Achievement of the organization’s goals, both immediate and over time.

2009 Entry Deadline
The nomination deadline for the AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year is April 1, 2009. Candidate profile forms are due by May 1, 2009.

Judging Process
A six judge panel, consisting of members of the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference Committee and Advisory Council, at least one AMAF Board member, and a representative from The Nonprofit Times will evaluate the entries. All judges will be leaders and experts in the field of nonprofit marketing with careers as nonprofit marketing academics, consultants, and practitioners.

Benefits
The recipient of the 2009 AMA/AMAF Nonprofit Marketer of the Year Award will receive:

  • One year paid membership to the AMA,
  • Complimentary registration to the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference (held July 15 - 17, 2009; Chicago, IL), with the following expenses paid: airfare, hotel, taxi/car service, and food per diem,
  • Recognition and award presentation on July 16 at the Awards Luncheon held at the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference and a cocktail party held in their honor in the evening,
  • Recognition in 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference program materials
  • National, hometown, and business trade publicity.

Individuals recognized under the two subcategories will receive:

  • Complimentary registration to the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference (held July 15 – 17, 2009; Chicago, IL),
  • Recognition and award presentation on July 16 at the Awards Luncheon held at the 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference and a cocktail party held in the evening,
  • Recognition in 2009 AMA Nonprofit Marketing Conference program materials,
  • National, hometown, and business trade publicity.
